Akritiri

The home planet of this species is called Akritiri. The little we know about them has to do with their legal system. Verdicts can't be reversed even if there's new evidence proving the convict's innocence.

The penal system serves only one purpose: the mutual elimination of the prisoners:

Every inmate is implanted at the back of their head a synaptic stimulator which enhances aggressive tendencies. Another contributing factor is accomodation: a limited number of inmates, about 50, have to live in one of many habitats on a huge prison ship. basically, they are kept like like wild animals: they are fed only sporadically, and then not very much. The result is a permanent fight for food and thus an increased aggressiveness which often leads to deadly fights.

Open Sky

Open Sky is a resistance which is considered a terrorist group by the Akritiri government, by its members a movement of patriots. They attempt to topple the current system and put a new government in power.

However, the real political issues in this conflict are unknown.

On stardate 50156.2, Paris and Kim become victims of the Akritiri understanding of justice: they are accused of being members of the terrorist group Open Sky and of being responsible for a bomb attack. Both make first-hand experience with the cruelty of the Akritiri penal system, but are rescued by Janeway, Neelix and Tuvok from this high-security prison.
